AEO vs. SEO: What Actually Changes
August 28, 2026
Search engine optimization and answer engine optimization solve related but distinct problems. SEO earns a ranking position on a results page a person scrolls through. AEO earns a sentence inside an answer a person never has to click past.
The core difference
A search engine returns a list. An AI answer engine returns a synthesis — one response built from multiple sources, only some of which get named. Ranking #1 in classic search guarantees a click. Being the best-structured, most citable source on a topic is what gets you named inside that synthesis at all.
What AEO actually requires
- Answer-first structure. Content that states its conclusion in the first sentence, not the fifth paragraph, is easier for a model to lift and attribute correctly.
- Explicit entity relationships. Schema markup, consistent naming, and clear "who does what" statements help a model resolve ambiguity about your brand.
- Source-level trust signals. Citation patterns, author attribution, and consistency across your own domain all factor into whether a model treats you as a reliable source to quote.
What doesn't carry over
Keyword density, backlink volume as a standalone metric, and meta-description click-through optimization all matter far less to an answer engine than they do to a search results page — because there's no results page, and no click to optimize for.
None of this replaces SEO. It sits alongside it, aimed at a different surface with a different unit of success: not a rank, but a citation.
